In Situ
- Residency as part of the In Situ programme
- Malte Martin — Agrafmobile
Malte Martin set up his workshop in Room 004 at Auguste Delaune secondary school in the Paris suburb of Bobigny for several months and worked with Year 8 students during his In Situ residency, sponsored by the SeineSaintDenis region.
“Everyone sends out signals. The city is a jungle of signals. How can we live in the jungle and send signals to others? How can we develop new signal landscapes?
Those are a few of the aspects of the research area I would like to explore with “In Situ”. The idea is to first appropriate the space I’ll have at the school. To continually transform it. To make my workshop a topographic landscape. To fill it with signals. To meet with students in this developing landscape. To encourage them to send me signals. To bring me their favourite objects and shapes. To supply me with signals and swap them with each other and myself.
In time, the indoor area will overflow and become the source of a visual landscape in the school and the adjacent streets and neighbourhood – in the urban jungle.”
They created hybrid pictograms and personal signals. Malte Martin then created a signal mural, “The Galaxy of Movements”, for the playground, which now signals the school to the world on Google Maps.
