The project began with a strategic study to manage the abandoned areas, which offered a vision of urban nature that took into account the potential value of these spaces, rather than considering them as the wasteland resulting from urban sprawl. While the city is managed by public institutions – the municipal, regional and inter-urban authorities – the landscape, which is the product of all types of practices, should be considered as a common good, which means that everyone must combine their efforts. Citizens become actors and managers. Elements from previous projects are reused, enhanced and repurposed. For instance, the wheelbarrows became our mobile logistics base – seeing them means that the garden is not far away.

We constantly have to make adjustments and change our plans when new difficulties arise. Discussions with residents also lead to surprises, such as the lightning-fast planting of perennials by the primary schools in the Lemasson neighbourhood.

Celebrating together is just as important for the public good as the garden. The inexhaustible collective energy put forward to revitalise a place or a moment in time illustrates the power of building happiness.
